FIFA (now known as EA Sports FC) and Call of Duty have always consistently topped the list of the most popular games. Activision’s franchise has monopolized the annual statistics in the United States since 2009, with only two exceptions: Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2013 and 2018 respectively.
However, 2023 will be a new exception. Call of Duty will lose its crown as the best-selling game of the year due to a formidable competitor overlooked at The Game Awards. That competitor is Hogwarts Legacy, developed by Avalanche and Warner, set in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter world in an era without Voldemort.
According to a report by market analysis firm Circana, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was the best-selling game in November in the United States. However, it is still not enough to surpass Hogwarts Legacy. Activision’s work is expected to be overtaken by Avalanche Software’s magical game. However, since December data has not yet been provided, there is some uncertainty in confirming the final results.
This means that Hogwarts Legacy will become the best-selling game in the United States for the first time since 2009, surpassing not only Activision or Rockstar titles, demonstrating the tremendous growth of the video game market and its ability to compete with other important players in the cultural industry.
In 2023, with Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, there will be a change in this trend. From now on, the growth and glory of Call of Duty will largely depend on Xbox and Phil Spencer.
