Carlos Mazón, the leader of PPCV in Valencia, has benefited from recent internal changes within the parliamentary and senate group led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo. As a result, Macarena Montesinos, the Congress Secretary General, announced that she will be the new group secretary of the Congress, as stated in her announcements from headquarters this week. This historic leader has become the “number 2” following the footsteps of the new spokesperson, Miguel Teodoro, which is a particularly important position in the party’s parliamentary organizational structure.
This was good news for Carlos Mazón, who has maintained a close relationship with Macarena Montesinos for several years. Many refer to her as the current Consell’s political “sponsor”. In fact, Mazón has always been known to wield enough influence within the national leadership or the parliamentary executive when it comes to such cases.
Montesinos was one of the young leaders who contributed to the transformation of Alianza Popular into the People’s Party in the late 1980s. She held various organizational positions within the party throughout her career, becoming a city councillor in Alicante from 1991 to 1995, serving in more than two regional councillor positions from 1995 to 2004, and subsequently becoming a permanent member of Congress. She continued her tenure as a congresswoman until 2016, and in 2019, she returned to the Congress as the top candidate from Valencia.
Other prominent leaders from Valencia within the parliamentary group include Esteban González Pons, who is included in the notable role of “pedrea”, and will position himself as a collaborator with the party’s top leadership. The reshuffle is also aimed at influencing other members of the PP in both the party and parliamentary fields. However, despite their position as coordinators within the Congress, there is no doubt that the former spokesperson will be the one with the most influence within the parliamentary group. He will also be responsible for important committees in the Congress, such as the Constitution, Judiciary, Internal Affairs, Foreign Affairs, and the European Union.
González Pons has gained a reputation as a spokesperson, and sources cited by this newspaper say that he has expressed a desire to return to the European Parliament in the elections expected to take place in June next year.
Other members of the PP from Valencia in the Congress will have to wait until Monday to find out what positions they will be assigned. The most important position for them is the chairmanship, which is expected to be highly popular as progressive forces mostly occupy it. The PPCV leader who can take on such a position is the former Valencia mayor, Alberto Fabra.
In addition, it is noteworthy that Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo and Rafael Hernando have been appointed as Deputy Spokespeople among Feijóo’s appointments. They were previously spokespersons in the Congress.
In terms of the senate, after the announcement of Alicia García’s appointment as the group spokesperson, Feijóo appointed Javier Arenas as the secretary on Thursday.
Former Valencia audience member, Gerardo Camps, has been appointed as the group’s deputy spokesperson, sharing positions with well-known leaders such as José Antonio Monago and José Manuel Barreiro.
